If you were in a vehicle tunnling underground, what would be the best way to steer and navigate?

Radar would be a bit useless, and GPS probably would have no coverage if you were moving through rock… headlights would just show the rocky wall in front of you… so what could the pilot use to work out which way he was going?

Solution is the same technique employed for Grade-5 Cave
Cartography. Surveys all start from waypoint usually a USGS
brass marker but any fixed reference point also serves. One
records how many feet travel progresses along a compass
bearing and angle of descent or ascent. Numbered station
instrument reads enter master log along with description of
progress. Software exists to utilize same process though
all my cave map efforts predate computer usage. I used a
thing called ’slide-rule’ to do my figuring and a pencil for the
sketching on waterproof paper. Had unexplored cave too.
These days I leave underground navigation to the younger folks and undertake other speleology interests.
